What happens after birthing?
We place baby were baby belongs, on your tummy where she makes her transition into the world, begins to breast feed and integrates into your family. We never separate the two of you. After you’ve had plenty of time to get acquainted, the newborn exam is done. We then examine you. We make sure you have someone to assist you with the bathroom and showering and help clean up. We stay a few hours after the birth to make sure that both mother and baby are stable and usually leave when they are snuggled up in bed together for a nice rest. We come back at 24 hours postpartum and 72 hours postpartum to check you and the baby. Newborn metabolic screen testing is done at the visit. We also come back to see you in one week and two weeks. We will then see you at 6 to 8 weeks for a check and Pap smear. Although homebirth is statistically safer, it does not guarantee a problem-free birth.
