What does TPMS mean?
The acronym TPMS stands for tire pressure monitoring system. This is a system that monitors the pressure in the tires of the vehicle and sends a warning when they are out of a specified range. Most systems use wireless sensors located inside of the tire. These are often part of the valve stem. There are also systems that monitor wheel speed through the ABS system. Since a low tire is shorter than a fully inflated tire, and rotates faster, wheel speed can be used to infer a low tire. For more information, please see our Detailed Topic Valve caps and TPMS.
