What does SPF mean?
SPF (Sun Protection Factor) is an indication of your protection from UVB rays. It does not address protection from UVA rays. The SPF value on a sunscreen product indicates how much longer you are able to stay out in the sun before getting a sunburn when protected by the sunscreen. For example, if your “natural burning time” is 5 minutes in the sun, a properly applied SPF 30 sunscreen will protect you from burning 30-times longer or about 150 minutes. The higher the SPF number, the longer your skin is protected before it begins to burn.
SPF stands for sun protection factor. It is a numbering system applied to sunscreens that indicates how long skin can be safely exposed to the sun without burning and showing redness. A minimum of SPF 15 is recommended daily on the face in all four seasons. With sensitive face skin and an SPF greater than 15, dilute the sunscreen with moisturizer by half. Remember: any tan from the sun is an indication of damage to the cells. The only safe tan is one from a bottle, as in a sunless tanning product. Don’t forget the sunscreen during all four seasons.
