What does H5N1 stand for?
The H refers to the hemagglutinin (HA) type and is primarily responsible for binding the virus to the host cell. There are currently 16 identified hemagglutinin antigens labeled H1 through H16. Only H1-H3 are found in human viruses. The N refers to the neuraminidase (NA) type, of which there are currently nine, N1 through N9.
