What does catmint to do cats?
cat nip is known as a treat to cats but if you put it on something that they like then they will start to go on that thing but then if you put it on something that they are not aloud to be on then they will get into trouble for going onto that surface but then it is also something that they think smells good and when cats think something smells good they go over to it.
Cats aren’t the only ones to succumb to the allure of catnip. The plant has been cultivated throughout Europe and Asia for centuries and was brought to America by colonists. It was first reported in the colonies as a commercial crop in 1796. Its leaves are used as teas and to scent potpourris, tenderize meat and make light yellow dye. As a domestic folk remedy, catnip has been used as an antispasmodic, stimulant and sedative. It’s also been used in the treatment of colds, colic, diarrhea and cancer. Most recently, scientists have begun to explore its benefits as an insect repellant because the same properties that attract cats repel roaches. So next time you get a twinge of guilt for getting your kitty “high,” remember that you’re observing a tradition that goes back for centuries.
Cat mint, or cat nip, is a sort of plant that smells a little minty to people. You can buy it in tubs, cat toys, or as a live plant- cats love this because they can chew on it the way they would grass. For whatever reason cat nip sends cats into a state of ecstasy. They’ll purr, roll around in it, and lick it, but don’t really eat much. I’ve had some cats who just purred and seemed to really enjoy it, others I’ve watched crawl across the floor with their pupils dilated. If you want to make playing with them fun, you can stuff a bit in a toy or find one that already has it [think those little crackling mice], but it seems most potent when you just lay it out for them. I personally like to put it in a deep bowl since they can get really messy with it, and they might even lay in it. 🙂 Overall it’s completely safe for your cats and will probably crack you up if you ever see your own cat’s reaction to it. It always does for me.
