What Does a Warden Do?
Why are the Wardens of Loreil trusted and turned to in times of difficulty? The name “Warden” is an ancient one, meaning “one who has care or takes charge in a situation.” The word “guardian” is also another term for a Warden. The Wardens of Loreil are not warriors in the classic sense, though they are trained in several combat methods. In the land of Rhydin and its associated realms, the Wardens are guardians of the Code and of the people — all people, regardless of their beliefs or allegiances. The need for neutral guardians, men and women whose honor is unquestioned and who are therefore trusted, is evident. Thousands of newcomers stream through the realms, and the chaos they can cause is difficult for many to witness. Various factions war with each other endlessly. Cheating in duels is prevalent. There are many different types of warden in the world, but when most people use the term they are referring to either a prison warden or a game warden. A prison warden is responsible for the general functioning of a prison, handling the disbursement of money, managing the guards, and directing policy. Historically, but less commonly these days, a prison warden could also refer to any corrections officer working in a prison, without any administrative responsibilities. A game warden, on the other hand, is an enforcement officer working in a natural preserve of some sort, or handling law enforcement in regards to the hunting of wild animals. The modern prison warden is largely an administrator, serving as the top personnel in a jail or prison. He does not directly act as a corrections officer, although he may be promoted from the rank of corrections officer in some cases.
