What do couples usually talk about over the phone while in a long distance relationship?
From personal experience after many calls of several hours at a time with my new long distance love, we talk about all sorts of stuff but its predominantly romantic and sentimental “you are beautiful”, “Thinking of you”, talking about how tender we are going to be, etc. Also an emotional issue can come up and because you cannot meet in the person at that time, sometimes you can have very protracted calls trying to sort it out, as there is no smiling, or physical touch to reassure you it can take a lot longer to resolve a deeper issue by telephone across distance. Physical separation can intensify the discomfort around an emotional issue.
We weren’t long distance but before we got married, if we didnt’ see each other we’d call and talk on the phone and discuss our day or night, what we ate, who we saw, what we were going to do the next day, what we missed about the other. There was always something to talk about. The weather, how the animals were doing, what we read, watched, heard. And we still do the same after being married 34 years even if we spent the day together.
I can’t speak for many others, but in the past when in a long distance relationship, he and I would talk about any and everything, really: our days, what we were doing at the time, what our surroundings consisted of- things of that nature. We’d watch basketball games together, listen to music, talk about our family and friends, make fun of eachother- I even did the occasional singing to him. As late night progressed, you could imagine how our conversations would take an expected turn towards things of another nature…but that’s neither here nor there. Lol. Now, as I think back on it, I suppose some of my long distance phone calls were of alot more substance than I would consider conversations with a boyfriend within range. But I’m sure many would agree that there’s no comparison to being face-to-face with someone you love, sharing the same space and breathing the same air.
