What causes liver cancer?
The exact cause of liver cancer is not known. Risk factors for primary liver cancer (hepatocellular carcinoma) include: • Viral hepatitis B and C • Alcohol • Cirrhosis • Exposure to toxins • IIntake of anabolic steroids In many patients, liver tumors occur when cancer spreads or metastases through the bloodstream from another area infected with cancer to the liver. Cancers that occur in the colon, rectum, breast, or kidney are the most common cancers that may spread to the liver. These tumors are then considered the primary source of the liver cancer.
