What Causes Anal Itch?
• A: Anal itching can be caused by a variety of different factors. Some causes are chemicals in the foods we eat, moisture in the anal area, antibiotic treatment, psoriasis, pinworms, hemorrhoids, and injury. Certain foods that we eat, especially spicy foods, can cause irritation to the anus which leads to itching. Also irritation can occur when the anal area is too moist. Moisture is sometimes caused by diarrhea or incontinence. Some antibiotics may also prohibit growth of certain “good” bacteria and lead to a yeast infection on the anus. Yeast infections tend to be itchy. Skin conditions like psoriasis can also leave an itching sensation. Pinworms and hemorrhoids are two common conditions that are associated with lots of irritation and itching. Small tears in the anal tissues can also cause itching, especially during the healing process.
