For free operating systems: I’m a big Linux fan myself, and like the following distributions: CentOS: Basically Red Hat Enterprise Linux rebuilt and rebranded from the open-source – useful for learning a corporate distro! Ubuntu: This, many believe, will be the next big desktop distro that will beat Microsoft’s desktop operating systems. Great support of drivers and the interface is very easy for folks to learn. SuSE: This is a very popular distribution of Linux, and has a very strong support of drivers along with a decent choice of GUI. Mandriva (formerly Mandrake Linux): Works well as a desktop or a server operating system. Decent commercial support, but you can download it for free to use. Other operating systems: Open Solaris: Although I worry sometimes about Sun keeping things open with this, especially updates and bug fixes, based on previous history, I like the operating system – and it’s (currently) free!
