What are the exceptions to the general rules for the use of personal health information?
PHIPA sets out a limited set of acceptable uses of personal health information by health information custodians without an individuals consent, including for the following purposes: Risk management, error management, or activities to improve or maintain the quality of care or any related program or service; Educating agents to provide health care; The planning or delivering of programs or services; The allocation of resources to any program or service provided or funded by the custodian; Obtaining payment, processing, monitoring, verifying or reimbursing health care claims; and For research, provide that specific requirements and conditions are met. A custodian may provide personal health information to an agent of the custodian to use for any of the above-noted purposes.
