What are the different types of belly dance?
Belly dance is an ever-evolving form of dance, so the answer to this question could change from minute to minute. The primary forms in the United States are American Cabaret, Egyptian Cabaret, and Tribal Fusion. Even these three general styles cover a wide range of sub-styles within them. Generally speaking, American Cabaret style is glamourous and glitzy. The movements are based on the traditional “bellydance” movement vocabulary, however there is more integration of western dance and music along with freedom for innovation. Egyptian Cabaret is, likewise, glitzy. However, performers of this style generally stick to Egypt-specific music and costume. Movements do not tend to be as broad or dramatic as they can be in American Cabaret and Tribal Fusion, but rather small and deliberate. Tribal Fusion is an attept to bring strong ethnicity into the dance. The styles here are varied, but generally tend to be a compilation of traditional moves, folkloric steps, and modern interpretation. The
