What are the differences between and smooth and textured implants?
The textured implants were developed as a way to prevent capsular contracture (hardening of implants) over time. The textured implants have microscopic ridges along the shell (cover of the implant) so as to prevent adhesions (sticking) of tissue around the implant which can lead to hardening. These implants are generally used with patients who have shown a tendency for capsular contracture with their previous smooth walled implants. The reason why textured implants are not used always for everyone is that these implants tend to be harder and can be felt through the breast tissue more readily.
