What are the best vehicles for driving in heavy snow and icy roads?
I Drove My 1992 Chevy Cavalier Front Wheel Drive with Very Good Snow Tires on The Front in all The Worst Weather Michigan could Throw at Me Back and forth to Work For 60 Miles a Day, for 6 years, And only Got Stuck once, and That was in My own Drive Way in 12 inches of Snow. Its all in How You Drive as For Icy Roads,I have Driven on them also,we get Rain in January,I live on A Gravel Road, 1.5 Miles off the Main Road. So its A Real Treat to Wake up To an inch of Ice on the Road and Leave for work at 5 AM.
I have driven on snow and ice many thousands of miles. In my honest opinion, heavier is better. For several reasons, it enhances traction, the inertia is a big help in getting through drifts, and a heavier vehicle is proven to be safer in a crash. Of course 4 wheel drive is a geat advantage in starting and climbing but is not helpful in stopping, (ABS helps in this) In a crash, weight trumps every thing else. The vehicle is not the only factor, you should educate yourself as to how the vehicle will react in slippery conditions. For example when braking, cornering, stopping and climbing hills. No substitute for experience.
