HDF is a self-describing data format. It has been developed by the University of Illinois. Software capable of reading and writing HDF data are freely available from http://hdf.ncsa.uiuc.edu/. Many free and commercial tools are available that are able to read data from HDF files. The major benefit of HDF is that compatible tools that can examine an HDF file to determine it’s contents, thereby saving considerable effort required for decoding non-self descriptive file formats. Envisat data is written in it’s own data format (PDS), for both historical and efficiency reasons. EnviView has the capability to translate PDS data into HDF files.
