What are the Advantages and Disadvantages of a Split Level House?
In my split level house, the garage is on the ground level and under the bedroom areas. Because of this, the garage is too short (and can’t be modified) to park my mini-van in the garage. Also, because the garage is unheated, the floors in the bedrooms are very cold. The heat distribution is a challenge. Doors should be installed on the bottoms and tops of each stairway to stop the cold air from freezing out the lower levels in the winter (and air conditioned air going to the basement in the summer time). The heat also rises to the bedrooms never get cool enough in the summer. Yes, stairs are a common part of life in a split, but rarely do I have to go more than one level at a time. That means I’m always about 7 stairs (half a regular staircase) away from where I need to be. Other than those problems, the house is ok.
