What are the accommodations like?
Programs take place at the two Livnot campuses, which are located in Jerusalem and Tzfat. The rooms are dorm style – simple with private bathrooms and air conditioning/heating units. Usually two to three people are assigned to each room in Jerusalem and 4-5 in the larger rooms in Tzfat. Each campus has a communal dining room and salon with a library.
Volunteers will be housed with a host family. Accommodations reflect the actual living conditions of many Tanzanians. There is no electricity; light in the evening is by kerosene lantern or flashlight. Water is delivered by the water lady in a hand-pushed cart, and must be boiled for drinking (bottled water is available for purchase). There are metal screens on the windows, but no glass. The exterior doors are locking. Volunteers have a private bedroom with door. Spouses will share a room. Children may be required to share a room with the parents. There is an outdoor bathhouse, including a toilet room and shower room, each with doors. The toilet is a typical ceramic squat floor toilet. The shower room has a small hole for drainage, but does not have a showerhead. You can heat water and use a bucket for showering.
Accommodations can vary depending on what project you participate in, and can involve you either living together as a group or billeted by members of the local community. For most of the projects you will be living and working as a group with your project team, which usually consist of 4-12 people. Some of the groups will be assigned one or two staff, called Group Leaders, to manage the project.
