During the summer holidays there are local shows every weekend throughout Devon. They range from small village affairs up to the Devon County Show (Exeter), Mid-Devon Show (Tiverton) and the Tiverton Horse Show. Shows have more than just “showing” classes. There will be some permutation of: • showjumping (generally a range of classes from lead-rein up to “open”) • clear round jumping (easy course, good for practice, winner is the one with the most clear rounds during the day) • working hunter (behaviour, turn-out & a couple of rustic jumps) • best pony club type (wholly and inscrutably in the mind of the judge) • family pony (13.2 hands and over, well behaved, ridable by any family member) • fancy dress (highly competitive) Programmes for shows tend to appear about 6 weeks in advance, available in local saddleries, feed suppliers, and horsey shops generally. I will try to include them in the local open events section of this web site. Here is some advice on shows for beginners: • Arriv
