What are plesiosaurs?
Plesiosaurs are a group of marine reptiles that populated the seas while the dinosaurs dominated the land. To be more precise, they are classified in a group called the Sauropterygia, which is in turn a subgroup of the somewhat problematic Euryapsida. “Plesiosaur” comes from two Greek words that together mean “near lizard.” This name was given to them after the bones of the first specimen to be discovered were described as resembling those of true lizards.
