Primary Care Trusts (PCTs) control local healthcare while strategic health authorities monitor performance and standards. A total of 152 PCTs cover all parts of England and receive budgets directly from the Department of Health. In July 2008, PCTs and Teaching PCTs were given the option to change their name by using the NHS Local prefix.
