What are P-elements?

0

They are transposable elements in flies. The “normal” P-element, found in the P strains isolated from the wild, encodes the transposase gene, flanked by IRs (inverted repeats). The transposase enzyme is responsible for moving P-elements, the IRs are required for a P-element to be able to move, and the transposase transcript can be alternately spliced to make an inhibitor of transposase.
