What are MiniDisc Recorders?

MD recorders can be used to record audio off your hard drive for playing anywhere, radio programs, compiling discs of your favourite tunes off CD or sampling sounds. MD blanks are small (2.5″), re-writable, cost about $2-3 dollars each and are available at many online stores at discount prices. They are magneto-optical which means that a laser heats up the disc, the molecules are rearranged, then cools and is ready to be read optically by a lower power laser. MDs are not susceptible to loss of data from large magnets such as speakers. Most MD recorders have a 10-40 second play buffer so you can walk or even jog with them without skipping a beat. MDs have long battery life (4-5 hours record, 10 hours+ play) and very near to CD quality audio. I have recorded off a CD through the optical digital cable to my MZ-R50 and can not tell the difference in quality.
