What are Honors courses?
Honors courses are sections of the core curriculum designed to provide a unique learning environment for highly-motivated and academically talented students known as Harcum Scholars. These innovative courses are designed to stimulate and challenge students while providing them with an opportunity to enrich and broaden their academic experiences. Students will take an active role in their learning by working closely with instructors and other students of similar abilities in order to pursue interesting and challenging topics, projects, and activities. Honors courses do not necessarily require students to do more work, but are deisgned to require a different type of work. Advanced critical thinking, writing, and research skills will be developed through independent study, enriched course work, and stimulating discussions in a friendly learning environment with small groups and highly motivated instructors. Honors courses are courses that represent an academic level of excellence that is above and beyond the standards of a normal Keystone course. Keystone’s mission is to help students achieve their potential, and part of that is providing a challenging and rigorous Honors Program. Honors courses are designed so that the student must complete — on average — an additional 20 hours of work. That additional work is focused on obtaining and testing higher-order thinking skills such as the synthesis and evaluation of course content. These thinking skills may be applied through an additional research project, an evaluation of a scientific study, or other applications. Honors courses are appropriate for students seeking to excel and demonstrate that they can complete more challenging work in a particular subject area. Honors courses are classes which offer more rigorous and in-depth coursework to especially talented and driven students. They are classically offered in the high school environment, and they are usually open to sophomores, juniors, and seniors. In order to sign up for an honors course, a student typically will need to demonstrate talent, motivation, and a strong record in basic courses in the same subject. These classes can offer bright students a chance to flourish in the school environment. Honors courses are not the same thing as advanced placement (AP) courses. Advanced placement courses are classes which are tailored for students who intend to take an advanced placement exam. These exams are used to allow students to skip over basic prerequisites in college by demonstrating that they know the material.
