WHAT ARE GLANDS?

0

Glands are body tissues which produce a chemical that helps the body function. Glands come in 2 major types, exocrine glands and endocrine glands. Exocrine glands produce a chemical that works directly at the area where it is secreted. Salivary glands are exocrine glands which secrete saliva into the mouth to begin the process of digestion. Endocrine glands produce a chemical that is secreted int the blood stream, where it can signal body tissues far from it’s source. The thyroid, for example, is an endocrine gland which secretes a hormone that affects many body organs and systems.
