What are family farms?
The family farm has been an essential part of the heritage of the United States since its creation, dating back to Jeffersonian times when Thomas Jefferson, America’s third president, emphasized the importance of agriculture and viewed farmers as America’s “most valuable citizens.” The family farm is a form of social organization, where all aspects of the farming process including production, marketing and farm enterprise are in harmony with the notion of the “family.” The dominant values of the family farm are family, community, neighborliness, stewardship and citizenship.
