What are electives?
Electives are ‘free choice’ courses that allow students to select any courses of interest to them. Electives are designed to give students the opportunity to broaden or deepen their main area of study or to explore other areas of interest. Electives do not have to be related to major or minors. Many Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences programs allow students to take up to 6 elective courses from the Faculties of Business or Science, Health and Education.
There are three components to any degree: General Education classes, Major preparation classes, and Elective classes. An elective course is essentially any class that is not required for General Education or for Major preparation. Electives are often required in order to accumulate the number of units needed for your degree or for transfer. Meet with a counselor to determine if the elective class you are considering is applicable for your degree or for transfer.
