In the TPA process, competency statements are descriptions of the knowledge, skills and attitudes that are intended to reflect what is required to meet the Standards of Practice for the Teaching Profession developed by the Ontario College of Teachers. They are set out in regulation (Ontario Reg ulation 99/02) under the Education Act and specify clear, transparent and evidence-based criteria against which the performance of teachers can be assessed consistently across the province. New teachers are appraised using a minimum of eight competencies set out in the regulation.
