What Are Boy Bands?
So how precisely do you define a ‘boy band’, and what sets them apart from other all-male groups of musical performers? Is the term derogatory, or can it be used in a positive way? The answer to both questions is that the term has evolved over time, and will probably continue to evolve as new boy bands make it onto the music scene. In general terms, a ‘boy band’ can be taken to mean a group of male musical performers who will generally rely solely on their vocal and dance talents whilst within the band. The instrumentation that accompanies the band will generally be recorded in the studio by a studio band, and during live performances will either be pre-recorded or will be undertaken by a hired band. What really marks boy bands as being different from other all-male groups is their musical style – generally, their songs will be positive, will be about love, and will feature vocal arrangements that showcase the range of vocal scale of the band.
