Book shares are a literature-based project that my students do twice in each grading period. The goals of this project are: • to engender in students a love of reading. • to give students a source of new book titles which might interest them. • to get students excited about books. • to encourage daily reading at students’ own reading levels. • to practice and master the following AKS objectives: • read for a purpose • independently select, initiate, and complete reading of long works • compare and contrast content between texts • identify author, illustrator, publisher, and publication date of a work • present information through reports, demonstrations, and projects • use the media center as a source of pleasure • write summaries • edit for spelling, fragments, and run-on sentences Students are asked to choose a novel (chapter book) on their own reading levels to read for the project.
