We have not eaten at many “tavola caldo” in Italy and I do not have a section about that in my Restaurant notes. In my experience, you only find them in the larger cities – is this true?
Pauline, indeed a “tavola calda” is found more often in largish places, mostly because it caters to people working somewhere and not having the luxury to go back home for lunch. In Assisi, of course, almost everyone has their mum or mum-in-law preparing a meal for them when they get home from work. In Perugia, both centre and suburbs, there is a tavola calda every other corner. A good alternative can be a rosticceria, where roasted chicken is prepared and usually a selection of other ready meals are available. The rosticceria can be found also in smaller places as they are intended as take away, and they often have 1-2 tables and some drinks. Another way to save, if the weather is nice and one can eat outodoors, is to go to a pizzeria and order their take awyay pizza. As there is no service included this is almost as cheap as buying pizza by the slice but one gets much more pizza. Indeed you should pay food in a rosticceria by the wheight.
