Was the age of consumerism the beginning of the end for America?

The end for America is quite dramatic. Though anybody with even the tiniest bit of intelligence can see that we are in a very depressing national state at the moment, I would hope that people would likewise be able to see that in the aspect of modern nations, these hurdles will eventually be jumped and the nation will not be “ended.” On another note, consumerism is really nothing but an economical word-veil signifying greed. While consumerism, in its entirety, is particularly reproachable, I cannot justify saying that it was the beginning of the end for America because I do not think there is an “end” in the sense of finality.
