There are many times when I find that, even after Chessmaster quits, there are one or more of my imported XBoard chess engines still running. Whats going on here?
There are two possibile problems here. Firstly, some engines are known to not properly handle the “quit” command, which is the XBoard command the Chessmaster sends to each engine to tell it to shut down. Some engines are known to expect “exit” instead (which is not correct). Others cannot quit properly if they are in a certain mode. The second reason for this is that, if Chessmaster crashes, all chess engines (including The King) that were running when Chessmaster crashed will still be running, because nobody told them to quit. Therefore, it is strongly suggested that, if Chessmaster crashes, you go to Windows’ Task Manager and manually shut down all engines that are still running. Also, the first time you play with a new imported XBoard engine, after shutting down Chessmaster you should check to make sure that the engine is not still running after Chessmaster quits normally.
