You may want to also drop the mattress down to the lowest level. We had the same fear about the bumpers but we took them out anyways. He has been doing just fine with a few little bumps but i think that they get used to not having bumpers. There are lots of products such as a crib protector – plastic to cover edges of crib. Also there is a gummy product as well. We have a 3 in 1 crib and have not been able to find the best product yet.
i would invest in getting a breatheable bumper pad instead of the one that you have now. its great cause its mesh, and also prevents them using it as leverage to flip themselves out of the crib. with a normal bumper pad, they can stand on it and hoist themselves out of the crib. with the mesh one it collapses if they try and stand on it. plus it allows more air into the crib when your baby is sleeping. if you have a slotted crib then you can get the one that they sell at babies r us. but if you have to solid ends on the crib, you’ll have to order it from this site: http://www.breathablebaby.com/ just click on where to buy, and you can buy it from any of their online retailers.
