Only an estimate of COD can be obtained with reduced digestion times. If the sample is readily oxidized then oxidation may be completed within a reduced digestion period. Systems that use a reduced digestion time do not conform to the Standard Method and so cannot be used for evaluating and reporting compliance with regulatory requirements. The online systems do not measure COD; they measure Total Organic Carbon (TOC) and use an empirical correlation to give an indication of the COD value of the sample. This correlation will hold true if the concentration of the pollutants changes; however, if the composition of the pollutants changes then the ratio of COD to TOC will also change.
