At the State of Tennessee, we do not usually recruit for specific job vacancies such as you would see in newspaper ads. We work on what would best be described as a job pool principle: we select from a pool of qualified applicants for jobs as jobs become available. Our application process places applicants in the appropriate pool, called a register, for each position for which you apply. So instead of waiting around for a job opening, this system allows job seekers to be placed on registers ahead of time. It’s very important to get your application in and the more detailed and accurate your application, the better we will be able to match you with a state job.

When you receive a rating score or you pass a written test (if applicable) for a particular job title, your name is placed on a list of eligible applicants for that job. The list of eligible applicants is used by State agencies when filling Career Service position vacancies. Career Service positions must be filled from among the top five eligible applicants who appear for the job interview and are willing to accept the position. The job interview is an important part of the employee selection process. Hiring supervisors are responsible for ensuring that job interviews are completed in a timely manner. Job interviews are usually conducted in the county in which the position is located. Costs associated with travel to and from interviews are not reimbursed by the State of Tennessee. Additionally, job offers generally will not include reimbursement of relocation costs.
