• Is your GPS unit on and switched to NMEA-0183 output? On Garmin units, specify NMEA/NMEA (or NONE/NMEA or RTCM/NMEA) and select NMEA-0183 version 2.0 for best results (GPSyTM will work with any version of NMEA-0183, but 2.0 has the most info). Make sure the serial speed is set to the same 4800 bps. • On Garmin units, it is better to use the NMEA-0183 protocol than the GRMN/GRMN mode. The Garmin real-time protocol can be slow and unresponsive on some units. We strongly recommend using NMEA-0183 for all real-time communications as it provides more data to GPSy and is less CPU-intensive. Only use the GRMN/GRMN protocol for data transfers (route/waypoints/tracks). • Does your GPS unit have a positional fix or is it in simulator mode (many GPS units especially Magellans will not send data without a positional fix).
