Is there a way to get out of a purchase contract for a used car?

There is a way, but it requires just a little advance planning. I have used this method in Ontario, Canada; the laws might be different where you live, so check before you buy. Make your purchase contract/agreement dependent on having a pre-purchase inspection confirm that the car is in a condition that is satisfactory to you. Then take the car to a mechanic that you trust and have him/her go over it with a fine tooth comb, so to speak. Have any deficiency documented on the report from the mechanic so that you can take it back to the party from whom you arranged to buy the vehicle. If the car is not in a condition that is satisfactory to you, you can back out of the agreement because one of the clauses of the agreement was not met. A seller who will not agree to this condition is probably a seller that you shouldn’t buy from anyway! The best $120 that I ever spent on vehicles was for 2 pre-purchase inspections for cars that I did *not* buy; my mechanic found things wrong that I was not
