Is the South Beach Diet a low carb diet?
The South Beach Diet includes 2 to 3 servings of whole grain cereals and breads, most vegetables and beans in Phase II which is the basic weight reduction diet. An initial two week phase of the diet, which many people chose to do, does limit carbohydrate intake as a method to lessen sugar cravings however it is not mandatory to make the diet effective. The foods include: 5 servings of vegetables including one of beans , 6 oz of lean protein, 2 tablespoons of heart healthy oil (olive oil etc.), 2 servings of fruit, 2-3 servings of whole grain carbohydrate, 2 cups of dairy and about 2 tablespoons of nuts. A glass of wine is also permitted as is a small amount of dark chocolate. Weight loss is a steady 1- 2 pounds per week and exercise is strongly encouraged.
