Is the Hyacinth Macaw really as bad as they say it is?
No. A Hyacinth Macaw does have a powerful beak but rarely uses the beaks full power. The cage MUST be well welded stainless steal, preferably with a dome top to allow more room. It will not destroy everything in sight provided it has lots of colorful wooden toys, thick manzanita branches, and all sorts of natural wood perches to chew on. An a few thick bells to make noise with. Also toys that test your birds mind such as nut finder toys. Provide all this and your macaw will not be as interested as chewing your curtains, or table legs. But when your bird is out of the cage it should ALWAYS be supervised. As far as attention goes your macaw MUST be out of its cage AT LEAST 4 hours a day. An hour preferably 2 should be spent with one on one physical contact and playing with lots of head scratches. The other 2 hours the bird is out of the cage should be spent on a separate play gym. The playgym MUST have lots of hard colorful wooden toys to keep your bird occupied. ALWAYS watch your bird.
