Is the dTap vaccine safe?
• Yes, the dTap vaccine is safe. • Side effects of the dTap vaccine are usually mild and last only a few days after getting the needle. • Mild pain, swelling and redness are common at the spot where the needle was given. There may be more pain or swelling at the injection site if the vaccine is given sooner than recommended. • Some people may get a mild fever, headache, muscle aches, lose their appetite or feel tired for a day or two after the dTap vaccine. More serious side effects are rare. • Women who are pregnant or breastfeeding may get dTap vaccine. • There is no risk of catching tetanus, diphtheria or pertussis from someone who has recently been given the dTap vaccine.
