Is Palm Springs, CA a hippie-friendly place to live?
Definitely, FOW. Mrs. Obviousman’s parents live out there, and we visit frequently. It’s OK to be gay, but if you don’t dress the part, you’re basically ostracized. Did you see or read Harry Potter 5? Every Homeowner’s Association has a Dolores Umbridge, enforcing the rules with a smile, but like a Milky Way bar with a pure evil center instead of nougat. It might be a bit better around Indio, but Palm Springs, Palm Desert, and La Quinta are not alternative-friendly. Maybe you could run down to Costco (on Monterey Ave) and stock up on Dockers, cargo shorts, and polos. You can have long hair, but it needs to be combed, preferably in a pony tail. You can have a goatee, but Hagrid- or ZZ Top-style beards are not acceptable. It’s not my call, but that’s the way things are out there. Perhaps, with just a few adjustments, you could fit in.
