Growing hemp is banned in the US for the most part. Farmers can obtain permits from the DEA to grow certain varieties of hemp, which is used for making rope, among other legal and legitimate items. The state I live in a state that has had at least 2 legitimate farmers apply for those permits. I don’t know the status of the application other than there is almost an unsurmountable pile of govt bureaucratic red tape to wade through to get that permit. However, the bulk of the people who advocate growing hemp are not farmers & only want to legalize marijuana. There were acres of hemp/marijuana planted planted during the WWII years, to increase our domestic supplies of rope. Most of which were abandoned after the War & many became the ’pot of gold’* at the end of the rainbow for druggies until they were found & destroyed. * pun intended.
