Is DV broadcast quality?
Yes, we know many broadcast stations that are airing footage that was shot with a DV camcorder, and many are airing footage edited on a 1 Beyond systems e.g. WGBH which produces 70% of all public television in the United States. Keep in mind that the DV Standard which is defined by the DV Codec (compression / decompression algorithm) is the same on many tape formats. These include DV, Mini-DV, DVCam, Mini-DVCam, DVCPro and others. The difference is the tape size and speed, not the quality. The Broadcast standard for years and even today is Sony Beta SP. The people who spent the money for these cameras did not want to believe that DV was able to hold this level of quality. “Look how small a mini-DV tape is. How could this be possible?” Finally, Sony has put an end to this debate and confusion by announcing when they discontinued Beta SP that it’s successor was DVCam.
