Is a Caesarean section recommended?
The greatest risk of passing HIV on to the child happens during birth. Delivery by Caesarian section reduces this risk; however, it can cause complications for the mother. If the mother’s viral load is low, she can have a vaginal birth. If not, a Caesarean section may be recommended. However, the method of delivery is best discussed with an HIV specialist and an obstetrician, weighing the pros and cons in each individual person.
