I have seen “medium format” mentioned in several photographer websites. What is a medium format camera and why is this so important?

We use both. Medium format cameras produce stunning images, however they are heavy, slow in focusing and film advance, and are not designed for portability. For weddings, we use medium format cameras for the formal portrait and other “posed” photographs. For all “action” photographs (ceremony and reception) we use the 35mm cameras because they are designed to be mobile and are capable of focusing, shooting, and advancing the film at the rate of four photographs per second. Medium format cameras are not able to do this.
