How will the scheme work?
The infrastructure of Civic Amenity sites will be upgraded so they can accept WEEE, like any other type of waste. So the scheme will be based on how much money is needed to upgrade CA sites across the country and create an adequate network of Designated Collected Facilities.Independent research has been undertaken to ascertain how much money is needed to upgrade more than 1,000 CA sites. The retailers that sell EEE will put money into a central fund and this will be used to upgrade the sites. The amount each retailer puts into the pot will depend on how much EEE they sell and the total fund size will reflect the proportion of retailers participating in the scheme. Once the sites are upgraded, people can find out from the retailer where their local facility is and deposit their WEEE. This will then be collected by producers of EEE or their agents, who are obliged under the Directive to fund final processing and disposal.
