Okay, so the first thing to remember when writing your personal statement is that it’s your interview in a way. The admissions team are not going to meet you (unless you’re applying for performing arts or Oxbridge) so this is your chance to sell yourself as you would in an interview. The second thing to remember is, be interesting! I know it sounds obvious but these guys really do not care if you achieved Grade 3 at Piano or if you have a part time job at Somerfield! It’s not like a CV where you would list your achievments, this is all about explaining why you wish to study at university and what an asset you will be to your chosen university. A really good idea for the opening pararaph is a witty little introduction about how you first became interested in your chosen subject e.g. It was my fifth birthday and after opening my chemistry set and blowing up several toys, I discovered my love of science… I know that’s a crap example but you catch my drift.
