How to operate an AED?
AEDs are designed to be simple to use for any minimally trained lay person. To operate the AEDs QUT has purchased, follow these steps: • Open the AED lid and the AED will automatically switch on. Put on the gloves included in the ready kit for protection. • Wait till the LEDs illuminate and follow the AED prompts to remove clothing from the patient’s chest; use the scissors in the ready kit to cut any bra or piercing if necessary. • Ensure the patient’s chest is dry; use the towel in the ready kit if necessary. • Follow the AED prompts and remove the pads from package and place firmly on the patient’s chest as instructed; shave excessive hair if necessary. • Stand clear while the AED analyses the patient. If deemed needed, the AED will deliver an electric shock. • Follow the AED prompts and start CPR, 30 compressions on the patient’s chest (to one-third the depth of the chest) followed by two breaths into the patient’s mouth.
