How old are the earth and solar system?

Dear Gramps, How long has eternity been going on in this stellar or solar system that earth is located in? Thank you. Aaron, from California Dear Aaron, Here we are mixing two concepts–time and eternity. We think we understand what time is until we try to explain it to someone else. But the concept of time provides for us a past that has already happened and that can never be recalled, and a future into which the present is continually rolling. But time is occurring within eternity, and it is a transitory element. The earth has had allotted to it seven thousand years for its “temporal” existence, or its existence in time. Those seven thousand years will have been accomplished at the end of the millennium into which we are now being ushered. We will then exist beyond time in eternity. But what is eternity? The dictionary tells us that eternity is an infinite duration, without beginning in the past or end in the future. So eternity has been going on forever, and will continue to do so. T
