How much windpower does Mohawk purchase?
In 2003, Mohawk became the first paper mill, and one of the first large–scale production facilities in the US to support renewable windpower through the purchase of Green-e certified Renewable Energy Certificates (RECs) from windpower projects. Green-e is the nation’s leading independent certification and verification program for renewable energy products, ensuring that they meet strict environmental and consumer protection standards. Today, 100% of the electricity used to manufacture the Mohawk grades that carry the “Windpower” designation is matched with RECs, which translates to the output of 24 windmills. The carbon savings is equivalent to 138 million miles not driven each year or the carbon uptake of a 24,400 acre forest.
